BULLETIN: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) will not hold a third ballot for House Speaker – effectively ending his quest to replace ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Jordan, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is a beloved leader in the conservative movement.
Punchbowl News first reported the developments.
Jordan received 90 percent of the support of his party, but he was done-in by 22 Republicans in Name Only.
Jordan will reportedly back a plan to make House Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry the interim speaker until January. The North Carolina lawmaker’s powers would be greatly expanded under the proposal.
McHenry is a McCarthy supporter.
The Washington Post, based on multiple sources, says “Jordan is pausing his bid for now, but he remains the speaker designee and will reserve the option to hold a speaker vote at any time. Senior Democrats are supportive of the plan.”
This is an absolutely terrible idea. It will all but set up a coalition government with Democrats and will all but ensure that Congress funds President Biden’s outrageous spending plan as well as the war in Ukraine.
Conservatives gave Republicans a majority in the House and we expected them to govern, not grovel.
Jordan needs to stand and fight.
