DEVELOPING STORY: Republicans tonight nominated Mike Johnson of Louisiana for House Speaker after Tom Emmer’s withdrawal. This makes the fourth attempt to fill the speakership since Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted.
He received 128 votes in the House caucus. It’s unclear if he will be able to get 217 votes to win the speakership.
A full vote is expected Wednesday.
“It was an honor for me to endorse Mike Johnson as our next Speaker when I ended my campaign,” said Rep. Mark Green (R-TN). “It’s time to unite behind Speaker-designate Johnson and to get back to work.”
“It will take a unified Republican Conference to secure the border, cut inflationary spending, and preserve the Constitution–these are our ultimate goals. I’m ready to help Mike Johnson in leading us to accomplish these goals,” he said.
Johnson has rock-solid conservative credentials and is a strong supporter of religious liberty. He is a devout evangelical Christian.
