Chicago police officers were given an ultimatum by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot: comply and reveal their vaccine status or defy and be subjected to unpaid leave.
Thousands of officers chose defiance.
Chicago Fraternal Order of Police president John Catanzara estimates 3,200 Chicago police officers are refusing to report their vaccination status, which violates the city’s vaccine mandate that went into effect Friday, Oct. 15.
Under the mandate, all police officers were required to get vaccinated or be tested twice a week for COVID-19. Police were also required to provide their vaccination status to the city by the end of Friday, according to Fox News. If they did not comply, officers would be placed on unpaid leave.
Catanzara told CBS2 the mandate is illegal because the city didn’t negotiate terms with the union.
Officers refusing to report their vaccination status were called in by supervisors on Monday, where they were asked once again to comply with the city’s mandate.
“If they refuse, it sounds like they’re going to go into a no-pay status, effective immediately,” the union president said.
“Everything from this mayor is a dictatorship,” he told Fox News. “She just decided she was going to do it and push it on the entire city workforce across the board.
