Transgender and nonbinary residents in Palm Springs will be able to receive $900 monthly checks with no strings attached, Fox News reports.
The Palm Springs City Council voted unanimously to set aside $200,000 for the new program.
The city’s mayor, Lisa Middleton, who is transgender, expressed “concern for the financial vulnerability of the transgender community.”
“Transgender Americans suffer extremely high rates of under and unemployment. Transgender Americans face enormous challenges living full and authentic lives,” the mayor said. “Those challenges have increased substantially in the past few years as transgender children and their families have been targeted by extremist legislators and governors.”
At least 20 transgender and nonbinary resident in Palm Springs will reportedly receive the free money provided by taxpayers for 18 months with the DAP Health and LGBT group Queer Works heading the program.
