Dem in Doghouse Over Doggie Car Ban

A Florida Democrat announced a plan to ban dogs in the Sunshine State from doing their favorite thing – sticking their head out of a car window while cruising down the road.

After her plan incited backlash, State Sen. Lauren Book (D) removed the unpopular provision from her Animal Welfare Bill, which she introduced in the Florida senate nearly two weeks ago.

Does the government have the authority to ban dogs from sticking their heads out of windows?

The bill specifically said it would ban dog owners from allowing their furry friends to extend their heads “or any other body part outside of a motor vehicle window while the person is operating the motor vehicle on a public roadway.”

“Our family has three dogs—two of which are almost 175 pounds each and love sticking their heads out the window—so I welcome and appreciate all public comment on this issue, which is only one piece of a complete proposed overhaul of the state’s animal welfare system as brought to me by veterinarians and advocates,” the state senator said in a statement to WFLA. “We can easily amend this piece out of the bill while protecting the intent of the animal welfare community and vets who proposed the policy because of unintended injuries they’ve treated — and we will. In the meantime, let’s all invest in a good pair of ‘doggles’ to keep our furry friends safe.”

While it is very common for dogs to stick their heads out of car windows, it does pose some serious risks and dogs have been injured doing so.

“Although most dogs love to stick their heads out open windows, the wind can seriously irritate mucous membranes and blow pieces of grit or other debris into their eyes,” the Humane Society said, via a Fox News report. “Pets could also be seriously injured by objects as you drive down the road.”

Even though the bill no longer includes the window provision, if passed, it would require dogs to use pet seat belts in the car and ban them from traveling in the trunks of vehicles.
