Gaetz Says Liz Cheney is Working Behind the Scenes Against Trump
Et tu, Brute?
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., tweeted on Tuesday that his colleague Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wy., is actively working behind the scenes to undermine President Trump and she should resign from her leadership position in the Republican Party.
“There was a heated exchange a number of representatives were upset at Liz Cheney going after some of our own incumbent members of Congress,” Rep. Jody Hice said on the Todd Starnes Radio Show.
“Enough is enough,” he said. “If we’re going to be a team, we’re going to be a team.”
The explosive tweet came after reported weeks of increasing tension between Cheney and her fellow Republicans in the House. Melanie Zanona, a reporter for Politico, took to Twitter to give an update from a closed-door House meeting among Republicans.
“Things getting HEATED at House GOP conference meeting now,” Zanona tweeted earlier Tuesday. “Matt Gaetz & [Rep.] Thomas Massie both got on the mics and went after Liz Cheney for backing Massie’s primary opponent.” She cited a source in the room.

Cheney, the chairwoman of the Republican House Conference, which is considered the third most powerful position, reportedly faced an onslaught of criticism. She was called out for publically supporting Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top disease expert, who has also been accused by Trump supporters of undermining the president.
“Reps. Louis Gohmert & Andy Biggs also got on the mics to defend Massie & express their concerns. Biggs even accused Cheney of undermining their ability to win back the House & said if you don’t have something nice to say about Trump, then don’t say it at all.” She cited the source.
Cheney, according to Zanona, did not back down and she defended Fauci and tried to paint Gaetz as a publicity hound and said she looked forward to his HBO documentary. (He is releasing a documentary called “The Swamp,” which bills itself as a behind-the-scenes look into Washington politics.)
Zanona wrote in Politico last month that Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has emerged as a vocal critic of Trump and—for the most part—has not received a response from the president.
She took a clear shot at Trump when she posted a picture of her father on Twitter wearing a mask, and wrote, “Dick Cheney says WEAR A MASK, #realmenwearmasks.” She also questioned if Trump was aware of reports that Russia put bounties on the heads of American troops.
Her report said that Cheney is strategic with the battles that she pursues with the president and there are no questions about her conservative credentials.
Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., told Politico that Cheney is a “strong defender of the president where they agreed. So she calls it when she sees it—sort of the Wyoming spirit, I guess.”
