Congress wants a pay raise.
Buried deep in Speaker Johnson’s government funding bill is a pay increase for lawmakers – could be as much as $6,600 annually. The average member of Congress earns $174,000 a year.
They also get access to free, reserved parking spots at DC-area airports, a dedicated reservation line to book airline tickets, a taxpayer-funded gym membership and access to a private dining room.
And let’s say a congressman gets in hot water – there’s a taxpayer-funded slush fund to settle workplace disputes.
Forbes reports that settlements have exceeded $17.6 million since 1997.
House members also get a federal subsidy to cover health insurance – amounting to about 72 percent of their premiums.
And depending on age and length of service, members receive a lifelong pension of 80 percent of their salary. That’s about $139,000 yearly until death.
Let’s say a congressman dies in office – his family will receive a one-time death gratuity of $174,000. An active-duty service member’s family only receives a $100,000 death gratuity.
