Democrats in Congress passed legislation Friday to make Washington, D.C. the 51st state.
It was a strict party-line vote, 216 to 208, with every Republican voting against it, arguing that any change to the district must come as a constitutional amendment, not in the form of legislation from Congress, Fox News reports.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) celebrated the passage as a “momentous day for American democracy.”
President Biden supports the “long overdue” bill but faces a hurdle in the 50-50 split Senate.
