Former President George W. Bush is lobbying for Republicans to work with President Biden on immigration.
He told “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell in a segment that air Sunday he wants to tell Congress, “Please put aside all the hard rhetoric about immigration. Please put aside trying to score political points on either side.”
Bush said Congress isn’t doing their job pointing to presidential executive orders on the heated topic.
“The problem with the immigration debate is that one can create a lot of fear: They’re comin’ after you. But it’s a nation that is willing to accept the refugee or the harmed or the frightened, that to me is a great nation,” Bush said. “And we are a great nation, and we are a great nation.”
O’Donnell said the former president supports a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, if they pass a background check and pay back taxes.
“Whether my own party listens to me or not’s another question,” Bush said.
