Liberal lawmakers have been pushing legislation to tear down Confederate statues in the U.S. Capitol since last June. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy agrees, saying they’re all “statues of Democrats.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) accused Democrat lawmakers of trying to whitewash their party’s racist past during a House vote Tuesday that would remove the bust of Chief Justice Roger Taney and statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and others who supported the Confederacy from the U.S. Capitol.
“Let me state a simple fact. All the statues being removed by this bill are statues of Democrats,” the GOP leader said. “I think the bill should go further. Maybe it’s time the Democrats change the name of their party.”
According to the Daily Mail, Democrats were unanimous in their support for the bill and were joined by 67 Republicans, including McCarthy.
He then took on House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her support of Critical Race Theory, arguing that her party has “replaced the racism of the Klan with the racism of Critical Race Theory.”
“Madam Speaker, to continue along in Critical Race Theory, where you would teach an individual that they’re right or wrong based upon the color of skin, goes against everything we’re voting about today.”
The bill passed by a 285-120 vote.
