Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) is calling for a full-scale crackdown on free speech.
The senator wants Facebook and YouTube to ban organizations and news pages that he says are tearing our nation apart.
His comments, posted on Twitter, came just hours after the social media giants banned platforms operated by Alex Jones and InfoWars.
“Infowars is the tip of a giant iceberg of hate and lies that uses sites like Facebook and YouTube to tear our nation apart,” the senator tweeted. “These companies must do more than take down one website. The survival of our democracy depends on it.”
I appreciate the senator’s candor but his statement is nothing short of an attack on the First Amendment. He wants to literally silence speech he disagrees with. I would be hard-pressed to find anything more un-American than silencing dissenting viewpoints.
Who gets to decide what speech is acceptable? Who becomes the arbiter of what constitutes hate? Is it possible they might target Fox News or the Daily Caller or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Family Research Council or my page?
I hope you understand what’s at stake here, folks.
Conservatives cannot and must not rely solely on Facebook for their community. There will come a day when they will try to silence our voices. And I simply will not let that happen.
