Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas reportedly gave Border Patrol agents in Texas Thursday a grim assessment of the border crisis.
“A couple of days ago I was down in Mexico, and I said look, you know, if, if our borders are the first line of defense, we’re going to lose and this is unsustainable,” Mayorkas said, according to leaked audio obtained by Fox News’ Bill Melugin through a Border Patrol source.
“We can’t continue like this, our people in the field cant continue and our system isn’t built for it,” Mayorkis added.
His comments come as Vice President Kamala Harris, who was tasked with the border crisis by President Biden, has yet to actually go to the physical border. She visited a Border Patrol station about nine miles from the Rio Grande in June.
Border Patrol agents encountered 212,672 people trying to cross the border illegally in July, the most in 21 years and three times the number in January, according to what Mayorkas told the press in Brownsville.
Agents expressed their exasperation about the dire situation in the leaked audio obtained by Fox News.
“For those of us who have been around here long enough … we don’t need to reinvent the wheel,” one agent told Mayorkkas. “We’ve had this happen before. We know exactly how to shut it down. We need to make illegal entry illegal.”
Although Biden has recently called the increase in illegals at the border “seasonal,” it has only continued through summer, when numbers are usually dropping.
