House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing a full-blown rebellion among Republicans after he struck a secret deal with Democrats to fund Ukraine while at the same time pushing a 45-day Continuing Resolution to keep the government running.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told CNN on Sunday he would file a “motion to vacate,” a call for a vote to remove McCarthy as speaker.
“I’m done owning Kevin McCarthy! We made a deal at the end of January to allow him to assume the speakership, and I’m not owning him anymore because he doesn’t tell the truth. If Democrats want to own Kevin McCarthy by bailing him out, I can’t stop them, but then he’ll be their speaker, not mine,” Gaetz said.
Last week McCarthy dared his critics to try and remove him from leadership.

“Go ahead and try,” McCarthy said Saturday. “You know what? If I have to risk my job for standing up for the American public, I will do that.”
“I think we need to rip off the band-aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy,” he said.
Gaetz was especially angered over reports McCarthy made a side deal to restore funding to Ukraine.
“The one thing everybody has in common is no one trusts McCarthy. He lied to Biden, he lied to House conservators. He had appropriators marking to another number altogether. And the reason we were backed up against this shutdown politics is not a bug of system, it’s a feature,” he said. “Kevin McCarthy’s goal was to make multiple contradictory problems, delay everything, back us up against shutdown politics, and at the end of the day, blow past the spending guardrails he’d agreed to.”
Not everyone in the conservative movement is backing Gaetz. Talk radio host Mark Levin, who is pro-Ukraine, blasted the Republican lawmaker.
“Matt Gaetz and the 4 other clowns undermined the Freedom Caucus and all conservatives when they sabotaged an 8 percent cut in Domestic spending and strong border control measures,” Levin wrote. “They rant and rave without a plan and without a real objective and now we get this 45 day CR. THEY did this. And predictably, they desperately blame everyone else.”
