A new poll out of Michigan shows Florida Gov. Ron Desantis (R) garnering more support over former President Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup.
Among Republican voters, 47 percent favor the governor and 42 percent chose Trump with 11 percent undecided, according to the Echelon Insights Poll.
Trump shocked many when he won Michigan in 2016 against Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton but lost it to President Biden in 2020.
The results of the poll included the following:
- 43% of Republican women in Michigan support Trump, compared to 40% who favor DeSantis.
- 51% of Republican men say they back DeSantis, while 41% say they support Trump.
- 30% of those polled say they have heard a lot about Trump referring to DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious,” while 68% say they have not heard much about it or nothing at all.
- 45% said the statement by Trump makes them think more poorly of Trump; 5% say the statement makes them think more poorly of DeSantis; 50% say it doesn’t change their mind either way.
Trump was the first candidate to enter the 2024 race.
The Florida governor is widely expected to announce his own presidential run later this year but has played coy when asked by interviewers.
Trump has also reportedly referred to DeSantis as “Shutdown Ron” when speaking in private of COVID lockdowns in Florida, as well as “Meatball Ron.” He has since said on his social media platform Truth Social that he would never use the latter term because “it would be totally inappropriate to use the word ‘meatball’ as a moniker for Ron!”
