U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is prepared to criminally prosecute illegal immigrants in the workplace, as well as those employers who hire them. “While we focus on the criminal prosecution of employers who knowingly hire illegal workers, under the current administration’s enforcement priorities, workers encountered during these investigations who are unauthorized to remain in the United States are also subject to administrative arrest and removal from the country,” ICE spokeswoman Danielle Bennett said in an email to the Washington Examiner. This week, acting ICE Director Thomas Homan said his agency will increase workplace immigration enforcement effort four to five times the level current. According to Bennett, that includes pursing more investigations and “conducting more I-9 audits.” An I-9 form is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization for someone to be hired to work in the U.S. Question: Is it right to go after the Employers? 888-788-9910
2:20pm – Thanks De Blasio! City law enforcement officials are being accused of ignoring ICE detainer requests in the arrests of five immigrants this week. In all five cases, Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed detainer requests with several agencies, including the NYPD, Queens Central Booking, Kings County Criminal Court and Westchester County Department of Corrections. The detainers required officials with those agencies to hold the men for 48 hours until ICE could take them into custody for deportation proceedings, but the requests were ignored, ICE officials said. The detainees are now in ICE custody, pending removal hearings before an immigration judge, the federal agency said in a statement. ICE requested 1,023 immigration detainers from the NYPD between October 2016 and September 2017, none of which city officials honored, according to a report from the police department. In comparison, there were only 80 detainers requested between October 2015 and September 2016, the report showed.

12:05pm- He Said/She Said! President Trump on Monday denied an Army widow’s claim that he struggled to remember Sgt. La David Johnson’s name when he offered his condolences last week, during a phone call that has since become the focal point of a political controversy. Johnson and three other Americans were killed Oct. 4 in an attack in Niger. The president’s seemingly private condolence call to widow Myeshia Johnson went public last week when a Democratic congresswoman claimed Trump was disrespectful. The White House has since defended the president’s tone while blasting Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson for talking to the press about such a “sacred” moment. But speaking Monday with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Myeshia Johnson said Trump also “couldn’t remember my husband’s name.”
