From O’Fallon, Missouri – a controversy over a lesbian couple’s wedding rehearsal dinner.
The owners of Madison’s Cafe are facing a media firestorm after they declined to host a rehearsal dinner for a same-sex wedding.
Mindy Rackley and Kendall Brown said they were told by someone at the restaurant that same-sex weddings conflicted with their values.
The restaurant’s owners have yet to make any public comments – but the couple made a bee-line for the Mainstream Media.
“She said, ‘your spouse is a woman?’ I said, ‘yes.’ She said, ‘I am sorry we are going to defer you to someone else because we don’t condone that kind of relationship,” Brown told television station KMOV.
The couple said they were appalled accused the cafe of disrespecting their relationship.
“It’s appalling to be treated any less than human by not serving me because we are women and are in a relationship. We feel less than human,” Rackley said.
Fox 2 News reports that it’s possible the cafe violated a local ordinance.
Madison’s is not the first business to deny participating in an event that conflicts with their values. Disney and Netflix threatened to leave Georgia over the state’s heartbeat law. And Adidas refused to build a factory in North Carolina in response to the state’s so-called transgender bathroom bill.
If it’s okay for companies like Disney and Netflix and Adidas to refuse to do business with people who share conflicting values, it should be okay for the rest of us. To believe otherwise, would be hypocrisy.
