Mother and newborn daughter released from hospital 40 days after contracting Coronavirus

A mother and her newborn baby both have been reunited with their family after 40 days of treatment for the Coronavirus.

Katherine Dawson of Garstang, England thought she had a chest infection and decided to go to the hospital, the doctors then tested her for the Coronavirus and the test came back positive. In March earlier this year, she was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

According to Fox News, Dawson was also 32 weeks pregnant at the time and the doctors determined that performing a cesarean section was in the best health for both the baby and the mother. Shortly after delivery on April 1, a new baby girl, Ruby was born and tested positive for COVID-19 as well.

As her condition worsened, Dawson was then placed under a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator. Blackpool Victoria Hospital said she had a 50/50 chance of survival. ITU consultant Dr. Jason Cupitt said, “It was a very challenging case and we were very concerned that she might not make it.”

Stuart Dawson, Katherine’s husband, along with their two other children, Grace and Ava, were unable to stay in contact with the mother and newborn during this time. However, Dr. Cupitt informed Stuart of his wife’s progress every day and the neonatal department also sent him daily diaries on little Ruby’s condition.

With God and the hospital staff to thank, both Katherine and Ruby recovered from COVID-19. Stuart then said “I owe my future to the staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. I thought I was going to be a widow looking after young children on my own, but they saved her life and Ruby’s life.”

When the couple and their child left the hospital, they were surrounded by thunderous applause from the hospital staff. Dr. Cupitt said: “Katherine and Ruby touched everyone’s heart and she is someone I will always remember.”
