Silvery Words

By Sylvia Schroeder

“The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace…” (Psalm 12:6, NKJV).

My children had some hefty arguments when they were young. Words became darts. “She said,” “He said” often spiraled into something I had to step into. I needed to bring equilibrium and truth back into the picture.

David penned Psalm 12 during difficult days for the nation of Israel. King Saul was out to get him, treacherous and evil men hunted him, and he wasn’t sure who to trust. People told lies about him. Empty and inconsistent words hurt and dishonored him.

David could have written it today instead of thousands of years ago.

Sometimes I find myself troubled by what people say. Like a child in an argument, I get bent out of shape, fiery and upset. When what I hear doesn’t seem to match the facts, I wonder where everything will end up, and I worry about the future.

People often say mean things. Words can be like friends or enemies, but David finds an anchor in God’s pure words.

I am so grateful I can do what David did. I can turn my attention to God’s words. His words are pure. No matter what I see or hear around me, no matter what happens in the world, like tried silver, His words can always be trusted.

Father, thank you for Scripture, because your words are always pure.
