From Prescott, Arkansas comes a story about controversy over prayer and the Holy Bible.
Preschoolers were seen praying over their food with teachers in the cafeteria.
And fifth and sixth graders were highlighted in a social media post after they were given Bibles by a local charity.
“This is a sight that should make anyone happy! It sure does us! Our 5th and 6th grade students received New Testament Bibles today and were reading them at lunch and even on the bus this afternoon,” read a message on the school district’s Facebook page. “God is so good!”
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a hateful group of atheists and agnostics, fired off a nasty complaint letter.
“When a public elementary school’s faculty and staff lead students in prayer, encourage students to pray, and distribute bibles to students, the district displays blatant favoritism towards Christianity and coerces elementary school students to participate in a religious exercise and accept religious literature,” the FFRF wrote in a threatening letter to the school district.
They say it’s against the law to distribute Bibles in public school classrooms.
“Such a blatant foisting of sectarian religion upon a captive audience of young and impressionable schoolchildren is beyond disturbing,” FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor. “It shows a complete disregard for those in the community with minority and nonreligious backgrounds — and for our secular Constitution.”
But instead of waving the white flag of surrender to the out-of-town atheists, the school district pushed back.
The superintendent told television station KATV that no one was forced to take a Bible or read the Bible. Furthermore – it is not illegal for teachers or students to pray.
Sure looks like the Wisconsin atheists picked the wrong southern town to bully.
