An actor, best known for his role in “Harry Potter,” has died.
Robbie Coltrane, who played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter movie series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, died at the age of 72, his agency WME told The Hollywood Reporter.

Coltrane was a Scottish-born actor who got his start in comedy and theater, acting in two James Bond films as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in “GoldenEye” and “The World Is Not Enough.”
His filmography also includes “Cracker,” “Nuns on the Run,” “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Mona Lisa.”

He defended Rowling when she was accused of being anti-trans on Twitter:
“I don’t think what she said was offensive really,” Coltrane told Radio Times in 2020. “I don’t know why but there’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended. They wouldn’t have won the war, would they? That’s me talking like a grumpy old man, but you just think, ‘Oh, get over yourself. Wise up, stand up straight and carry on.’”

Last year, Coltrane took a look back at the legacy of “Harry Potter” and the ongoing impact for HBO Max’s “Return to Hogwarts” 20th anniversary special.
“The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children,” he reminisced with tears in his eyes. “So you could be watching it in 50 years’ time, easy. I’ll not be here, sadly, but… Hagrid will, yes.”
Tributes poured in online:
Very sad news. He had such range and depth as an actor, from brilliant comedy to hard-edged drama. I think my favourite of all his roles was Fitz in Cracker.

Very sorry to hear Robbie Coltrane has died. We shared a dressing room once and he had the biggest pants I have ever seen, which he wore with tremendous flair. We were friends from then on. pic.twitter.com/b1Wr5wUuz9
