LOS ANGELES — Chaos erupted Sunday afternoon in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles when a U-Haul truck plowed straight into a crowd of protesters gathered near the Wilshire Federal Building, leaving several people injured and prompting an immediate law-enforcement response.
🚛 Truck Drives Through Crowd During Rally
Hundreds had assembled in broad daylight for an anti-Iranian regime demonstration — a rally in solidarity with the ongoing protests in Iran that have drawn international attention. Suddenly, witnesses say, a U-Haul truck barreled into the crowd, sending people scrambling for safety.
📌 Injuries and Aftermath
Local fire officials confirmed that at least two people were treated at the scene, though both refused transport to a hospital. Other reports suggest multiple people may have been injured as a result of the vehicle’s path through the protesters.
🧨 Scene Escalates Quickly
Cellphone video and eyewitness accounts show the truck bearing a message on its side reading:
“NO SHAH. NO REGIME. USA: DON’T REPEAT 1953. NO MULLAH.”
The words reference the 1953 CIA-backed overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected government.
Video from the scene shows protesters surrounding the vehicle, smashing windows and attempting to stop it, before officers from the Los Angeles Police Department pulled the driver from the truck and took him into custody.
🛑 Law Enforcement Response
Police immediately cordoned off the area with crime-scene tape as investigators combed the scene for evidence. The 405 Freeway ramp near Wilshire was temporarily closed as authorities worked to restore order.
At this time, no official motive has been released, and it is unclear whether the driver will face charges. Law enforcement has not yet identified the driver or issued a formal statement on motive.
📍 Protest Context
The demonstration was part of broader solidarity actions with Iranian protesters amid unrest in the Middle East, drawing a large and passionate crowd.
