According to police, 33-year-old Kaitlyn E. Tracey, a Canadian citizen living in New Jersey, approached a group of teenage girls on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk on July 3 while recording them with her cellphone. Investigators allege Tracey became enraged over the girls’ attire before striking one of the juveniles.
Fox News, citing court documents and police, reported that Tracey allegedly “slapped the victim across her face and body.” Police said the confrontation centered on the girls’ “patriotic colored sweatpants with political wording,” including the words “Trump” and “ICE.” Surveillance video allegedly captured the assault.
The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department said the suspect allegedly “strik[ed] the juvenile female, once to the body and once to the face, with an open hand.” Authorities later identified Tracey through the surveillance footage and obtained an arrest warrant.
Tracey has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, harassment and obstruction. Following her arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took her into custody. She is currently being held at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark while her criminal case proceeds.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on X:
Kaitlyn Tracey is a criminal illegal alien from Canada who was charged with simple assault, neglect of a child, compounding crime, and harassing communication. She allegedly struck a teenage girl wearing pro-Trump memorabilia on a boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach during 4th of July weekend. She was arrested by the Point Pleasant Beach Police department who facilitated a controlled transfer into ICE custody, where she will remain pending her immigration proceedings. She entered the United States on April 14, 2024, on a visa set to expire on September 6, 2024. In violation of our nation’s laws, she overstayed her visa and failed to depart.
The teenage victim was not seriously injured in the encounter, according to reports.
The incident quickly ignited outrage on social media, where many users condemned the alleged assault and argued that political disagreements should never escalate into violence against children.
Meanwhile, Tracey’s husband, Matthew Geroni, defended his wife on social media, claiming the public has misunderstood what happened and pleading for financial assistance to hire legal and immigration attorneys. A GoFundMe campaign created on her behalf was later removed following public backlash.
The case has also drawn renewed scrutiny because Geroni has previously posted inflammatory anti-Trump content online. The New York Post reported that in one TikTok video he wrote, “Praying the entire Trump family gets cancer. And I mean everybody, like little kids,” and in another post stated, “Praying the next assassination attempt works.”
