Cheesecake Choices

By Lori Brown

“…he was chosen by God…” Hebrews 5:5

I recently joined family at a Cheesecake Factory restaurant. As the name implies, this restaurant is known for its cheesecake options. How my eyes lit up as we entered and walked past the large cheesecake display cake. That case was filled with all sorts of sinful choices, starting with Red Velvet and moving on down to the Oreo Extreme options. I think I must have drooled a little too much as my eyes absorbed thousands of calories.

When it came time at the end of the meal to select one piece for dessert, I agonized over the flavors. From chocolate to cherry, the flavors danced around in my head and on my tongue until I finally blurted out, “Just give me the red velvet.”

Maybe, like me, you sometimes struggle to make choices. Life is filled with lots of decisions, from what to wear and what sort of car to drive to larger decisions about having children, marriage, and significant career changes. When I get stressed about these decisions, I find comfort in knowing that the Bible tells me that God has always been consistent with his choices.

In Hebrews, we are reminded that God chose Jesus, his only son, to be our ultimate sacrifice for sin. He wasn’t wishy-washy about this decision. Similarly, the Psalms remind us that he chose us. We were never an accident. God chose to create and to die for us out of a place of sincere love and intimacy.

Aren’t you glad that our God doesn’t struggle to choose us, or to choose what’s best for us? Take a few moments today to thank him for his goodness and for his choices.

Dear God, thank you for choosing me each and every day!
