Family Research Council was among 47 prominent conservative groups that signed an open letter warning the mainstream media against using data on hate groups compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

FRC President Tony Perkins broke news of the letter on the Todd Starnes Radio Show.

“It’s being used far and wide and this is part of a well thought-out strategy by the left to ultimately silence conservatives in the market place of ideas,” Perkins told Starnes. “Their goal is to crush groups on the right.”

The letter calls the SPLC a “discredited, left-wing political activist organization that seeks to silence its political opponents with a ‘hate group’ label of its own invention.”

“People need to lean on the media and ask why they are using this left-leaning organization as a source,” Perkins said.
