…for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:8
Have you ever read your Bible and it felt like God put a spotlight on a verse? Sometimes it’s a verse you’ve read dozens of times before, but on this day, it almost jumps off the page at you? That’s what happened during my devotions this morning.
I’ve been reading in I Samuel, and I’ve reached the part where the Israelites beg God for a king. God whispered to Samuel that Saul was to be the new king. Samuel invited Saul to dinner with other guests and served him the choicest piece of meat. And then Samuel said that even before he’d invited the other guests, he’d been saving the best meat for Saul. And those are the two words that glared out at me, “Even before.”
In Jeremiah 1:5, God says that even before we were born, He knew us.
In 2 Chronicles 20, when Jehoshaphat and the Children of Israel went to battle, they discovered that even before they got there, God had already provided the victory.
In I Kings 17, even before God sent Elijah to hide out by the brook Cherith, He’d already arranged for the ravens to fly in and bring him food. Yes, folks, that was Meals by Wings, the Bible equivalent of Meals on Wheels.
I’m sure that many of us are experiencing difficult times today—job losses, health issues, a prodigal child, or whatever. Those are hard seasons of life, and there are often days when the stress is overwhelming.
But there’s no need to worry, because no matter what we encounter, we can rest assured that God knows about it and that even before we realize we have a need, He has already provided for it. Even before.
Lord, thank you for the assurance that you have provided even before I have a need.
