First Lady Dr. Jill Biden spent this weekend talking to young people in Kenya about condoms and safe sex practices.
As a part of Biden’s five-day trip to Namibia and Kenya, she attended the Shujaaz Konnect Festival, an event partly put on by MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation which partners with the U.S. Agency for International Development to help young people in Kenya avoid HIV infection.
“These are issues that really all people need to talk about and yet, somehow, they don’t, and the consequences of not talking about it are so dire,” the first lady said to some of the festival’s attendees, per an Associated Press report. “So I love seeing the young people here.”
While Biden was visiting some of the tents at the festival, she was shown a questionnaire given to the attendees to help them have conversations about safe sex. The first question said, “What would you say if I told you I had a condom in my pocket right now?”
The first lady laughed at the question and asked if it was meant to be used while meeting someone for the first time.
A representative at the festival said that blunt questions are used to help the young people overcome shyness and start important conversations.

“I’m surprised you don’t start with like, ‘What’s your biggest achievement?’ rather than, ‘I have a condom in my pocket,’” Biden said.
Other stops on her trip included attending a meeting with a group of female small business owners who are part of Kenya’s Joyful Women program, which aims to help women in the country become financially independent. Additionally, the first lady spoke to a group of local farmers and entrepreneurs who have taken part in the Hello Tractor program. This initiative seeks to connect farmers with machinery they need to run their businesses.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is facing a humanitarian crisis on its southern border, and neither the first lady nor President Biden has visited East Palestine, Ohio, the site of a train derailment on Feb. 3 that spread hazardous chemicals in the area.
