Food Network star Duff Goldman got his fluffernutter in a twist over similarities between a cake he made for President Obama’s inauguration and one made for President Trump.
“The cake on the left is the one I made for President Obama’s inauguration 4 years ago,” he tweeted. “The one on the right is Trumps. I didn’t make it.”
He concluded his tweet with an emoji for confusion.
The multi-tiered cake was presented to President Trump at the Salute To Our Armed Services Inaugural Ball. And there’s no doubt the cake bears a striking resemblance to the one Goldman made for Obama.
But the more pressing question is — who cares and why is this even news?
Dude – it’s a freaking cake.
“Celebrity pastry chef suggests Donald Trump’s inauguration cake was plagiarized,” screamed a headline from The New York Daily News.
“Duff Goldman Claims Trump’s Inauguration Cake Ripped Off His Obama Cake,” was the headline on Good Housekeeping.
The Boston Globe demanded answers, “Did Trump’s baker plagiarize a cake?” And New York Magazine accused the president of eating “plagiarized cake.”
Mr. Goldman is known for his outrageously designed cakes. He’s the owner of Baltimore’s Charm City Cakes and a Food Network star.
I’m not well-versed in pastry ethics, so I reached out to the folks over at Betty Crocker to see if some sort of rule had been broken. They have not returned my call.
I know that Mr. Goldman is terribly aggrieved by this calamitous episode, but perhaps he should ease up a bit. Imitation, they say, is the best form of flattery.
So come on, Duff. Don’t be a cupcake.
