A young girl was forced to share a bed with a boy who identified as a girl during an overnight school trip to Washington, D.C.
Joe and Serena Wailes are suing Jefferson County Public Schools in federal court. They say the Colorado school district violated their 11-year-old daughter’s constitutional rights.
Matt Sharp, an attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom, says the case centers on parental rights. He said parents have a right to opt their children out of policies that conflict with their beliefs.
In this particular case, the school district allows biological boys to share overnight accommodations with girls based solely on gender identity. The policy does not require teachers to notify parents or obtain parental consent.
“The district’s policy of rooming students by gender identity rather than sex without prior notice or a sex-separated alternative violates the families’ free exercise, bodily privacy, and parental rights,” ADF said in a press release on Thursday.
The Wailes say their daughter was forced to ultimately share a bed with a little boy.
“Parents, not government bureaucrats, have the right and responsibility to direct the upbringing and education of their children, and that includes making informed decisions to protect their children’s privacy,” ADF Senior Counsel Kate Anderson, director of the ADF Center for Parental Rights, said in a statement.
Joe and Serena Wailes, Bret and Susanne Roller, Rob and Jade Perlman, and their children are challenging Jefferson County Public Schools for violating parents’ fundamental right to make decisions about the upbringing and education of their children.
Little boys should not be sharing beds with little girls. Period. And any school district that allows such behavior should lose every penny of federal tax money. And any teacher who allows something like to happen should be in jail.
