John Gibson has shifted from his career as a television and radio broadcaster to a mystery novelist. And while his latest book is fictitious, it is based on one of the biggest stories he was assigned to cover – The Trial of O.J. Simpson.

Gibson, a prominent Fox News Channel television and radio host, joined The Todd Starnes Show Thursday to discuss his debut novel, “OJ’s Knife”. The novel takes readers through a cast of characters determined to get their hands on the key piece of evidence – the knife used to murder Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Gibson broke into the news business later in life as an NBC News correspondent in Burbank, California in 1994.

“Two months into the gig, O.J. killed his wife,” Gibson recalled. “So all of a sudden, I am on the air from 9 o’clock in the morning until 6:30 P.M. at night doing live shots for stations literally every two minutes.”

Gibson’s coverage of American crime story would catch the eye of Fox News chief Roger Ailes.

“It was really big. It was really important. And it was a huge boost to my career,” he said. “I knew, you just can’t let this one go. There’s never going to be another [story] this big.”

Not only did the trial of O.J. Simpson jumpstart Gibson’s career, but his experience covering the famous crime story would also become the plot for his mystery novel.

“I lived in the world of reality for so long. …It was kind of a pleasure to check out and just make stuff up. A lot of it comes from my experiences in the news business.
