4 Shot, 2 Dead at Richmond Road Baptist Church

Police say the gunman opened fire on parishioners outside Richmond Road Baptist Church. Two women were killed. Two men survived with one in critical condition. Police say the gunman may have had a connection to the church. A state trooper was shot earlier near the Bluegrass Airport. The trooper is in stable condition. The gunman, who has not been identified, was killed by law enforcement at the church.

Kentucky State Police Issue Statement

Kentucky State Police say a trooper was shot by a gunman who fled the scene and ended up at Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington. The gunman then opened fire at the church. There are multiple victims at the church. The state trooper is expected to survive. The gunman is dead.

Following is their statement:

Kentucky State Police is aware of a trooper-involved shooting incident that occurred on July 13, 2025, at 11:36 a.m. in Fayette County. The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, at which time KSP and Lexington Police Dept KSP & LPD were able to secure the suspect. At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention. There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS is on scene .  The suspect is deceased.  KSP will provide more information as it becomes available.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) issued a statement calling for prayers for the victims.

“Saddened to hear about the tragic shootings—Blue Grass Airport and Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington,” the senator wrote on X. “Kelley and I are praying for all the victims, the injured trooper, and their families. We are grateful for the brave first responders. Violence like this has no place in Kentucky.”

Governor Confirms Multiple Injuries at Church

Gov. Andy Beshears (D-KY) confirmed that there were two shootings.

“Kentucky, we are aware of a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect, including a trooper-involved shooting and an additional shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church with multiple injuries,” the governor wrote on X. “The trooper and others are being treated at a nearby hospital.”

“Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,” the governor said. “Details are still emerging, and we will share more information as available.”

Lexington Police Confirm Two Shootings Connected

Statement from the Lexington Police Dept.: On July 13, 2025, Lexington Police Officers arrived at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in the 5800 block of Old Richmond Road for a shooting with multiple victims. The suspect is deceased.

This shooting is connected to the earlier shooting that occurred on Terminal Drive, where a Kentucky State Trooper was shot. While that shooting occurred on Terminal Drive, it was unrelated to the Blue Grass Airport. The Trooper is in stable condition, receiving medical treatment.

The shooting on Old Richmond Road is also an officer-involved shooting. We are working with the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
