New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared the month of January as Muslim American Heritage Month. She ordered 16 landmarks across the state to be illuminated in green – the same color palette used by Hamas. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
Among the buildings illuminated to honor the Muslims is One World Trade Center – the tallest building in New York City – it’s spire now glowing Hamas green. The tower stands where the twin towers once stood – skyscrapers that were brought down by Muslims – in the name of the religion of peace.
The proclamation, issued Friday, declares January as Muslim American Heritage Month for the first time in the Empire State. Hochul’s office says the move is meant to recognize the “heritage and culture” of Muslim Americans and celebrate their contributions to New York’s social, economic and civic life.
Her decision ignited outrage from freedom-loving patriots— especially on social media — who argue that shining green lights on structures tied to 9/11 memories shows a profound lack of sensitivity. New York Post
“The twin towers were unable to be lit green tonight,” Queens Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino posted on X, referencing the tragic anniversary of the 2001 attacks. “It’s disgusting that the Freedom Tower — which stands at the World Trade Center site — is lit in green to celebrate Islam.”

Another social media user wrote simply: “There must be some mistake, this can’t be real??” while political activist Drew Pavlou chimed in, “Lighting up the new World Trade Center in the colours of Islam is a bit much, don’t you think.”
One commenter on Facebook blasted the decision as “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have lit up New York in green lights to dedicate January as Muslim Heritage… and One World Trade Center too??” — capturing the incredulity many felt online.
Supporters of the proclamation, including the newly inaugurated Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, praised Hochul for recognizing the diversity of the state’s population. But critics have zeroed in on the optics of lighting a tower built on the wreckage of the Twin Towers, viewing it as a glaring misstep in the wake of unresolved national trauma.
In a statement shared on her official X account, Hochul doubled down on her message of unity, saying, “The resilience, compassion and contributions of Muslim communities help make our state stronger.”
Coming up this September the nation will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Muslim terrorist attacks that brought down the two towers in New York City. Every year giant beams of light are illuminated to remind Americans of what we lost on that day. Don’t be surprised on September 11th if those beams of light are “Hamas green.”
