Hamtramck High School in Michigan is holding an all-girls prom to accommodate students who cannot attend the traditional co-ed prom because of cultural reasons.
In other words, the ‘Princess Prom’ was created to accommodate Muslim girls.

Mlive.com reports the event is “intended to create a safe space for Muslim girls who normally cover up in hijab to let their hair down in an environment with no boys and no cellphones.”
No boys allowed. No cellphones allowed.
Phones are banned to prevent unveiled images of the girls from being posted to social media, the online news agency reported.
“We’re on our phones 24-7 and if you don’t have it for a few hours, it’s so calming and everybody is having a fun time,” said Aisha Khanum, an 18-year-old student at Hamtramck High School who has been on Princess Prom planning committee for three years.
The alternative prom was created five years ago by a group of Muslim students. The girls cover the cost by hosting fundraisers, a school counselor told MLive.com. In other words, no taxpayer dollars are being used (that’s refreshing).
And since boys are not allowed – the girls are free to let their hair down – literally. They get to trade in their traditional head coverings for fancy gowns and high heels.
But still – the idea of a school-sponsored event to accommodate a specific religious group is a bit unusual. And it does lead to what some would call a cultural quagmire.
For example — would boys who identify as girls be permitted to attend the ‘Princess Prom’? Or what about gender fluid students?
And why are followers of the Muslim faith being given special accommodation? Would the school consider holding similar events for Christian students or Jewish students?
As one astute reader noted — in their attempt to be inclusive, the school district is actually being exclusive.
