Is it permissible to desecrate the American flag for educational purposes?

That question is at the center of a raging firestorm in suburban Chicago after York High School allowed teachers to desecrate an American flag – in the school’s library.

Staff members from the English and social sciences departments placed an American flag on the floor in the school’s library on Sept. 26 as part of a project on First Amendment rights.  Students were not permitted to walk-on or deface the flag.

The school gave the defiled flag to the American Legion so it could be properly retired.

A spokesperson for the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 told the Chicago Tribune neither the school board nor district administrators were notified prior to the display.

Well, I suppose we should not be surprised that a bunch of public school educators decided to desecrate Old Glory.

“It was used for students to reconcile their feelings about current issues and whether their First Amendment rights are protected,” Principal Erin DeLuga wrote in a letter to parents.

“The purpose of the forum was to explore the complexities of the constitutionally protected right of free speech by examining real cases,” DeLuga added.

The library desecration was a recreation of the 1989 Dread Scott’s “What is the proper way to display a U.S. Flag” art exhibit. The original exhibit included a desecrated American flag.

“This is in no way meant to disrespect the flag, the military or the government,” the principal wrote to parents.

Parents and students were outraged by the school’s un-American exhibit.

“This is just plain disrespectful,” one school alumnus wrote. “I was taught at a very young age the flag never touches the ground. Never! I am so upset at this sorry excuse for educating today’s youth. “

“I am appalled at this form of teaching,” another graduate wrote on Facebook. “You say that this in no way was mean to be disrespectful, but in all reality it most certainly was.”

“Your staff is disrespecting our American flag,” wrote a York alumni who served in the military. “My grandfather,  a York alumni, fought in World War II – risking his life for that flag you put on the ground. Want to teach freedom of speech – disrespect a Nazi flag.”

Surely there must be some other way to teach the children about their First Amendment rights that does not involve desecrating Old Glory?

Of course, there were supporters who praised the school for defiling our flag.

“I’m a proud York graduate today,” one woman told the Tribune. “This is ONE example of democracy in action,” said another.

I wonder what would’ve happened had to teachers desecrated a rainbow flag for the sake of teaching kids about their First Amendment rights?

The whole point of this display was to influence young minds with the left’s ideology, more commonly known as indoctrination, which seems to have become the main directive of public schools.

Bobsburger. The flag may not bring back the dead soldiers, but we still have to honor them for the sacrifice they made. desecrating the flag dishonors them and there sacrifices. I can see your anger about politics and I personal don’t like couroupt politics , but politics are necessary. When soldiers are sent to war, they send them to protect the country and know the risks that are involved. as for the pareds for the military, thous are ment to help the moral of the soldiers and citizens. and guns527, seriously. you have no excuse to tell someone to harm… Read more »

Maybe we should just tear down all our monuments to a bunch of dead cocksuckers like Washingon, Lincoln, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, Lee, Meade, Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Martin Luther King etc.. We should also remove these politicians from our money too. Maybe have wildlife or monuments on our coins, maybe even individual military units, like army or navy quarters.. Sandblast Mt Rushmore and Mt. Stone in GA.. We can also get rid of the military parades and the Thunderbirds and blue angels since they cost money. Close down the service academies and have the officers go to OCS school… Read more »

The American Flag is meant to be a symbol of America its self. Freedom. The men and women who go to war and who die in thous wars where putting their life on the line in order to protect both our freedom and our country, which the American Flag symbolizes. The "risked his life to protect that flag" is a metaphor meaning that he was risking his life to protect our country and our freedoms and the people who volunteer for military service, take an oath to protect our country and its freedoms and go beyond the call of duty.… Read more »

So let them put Confederate, Nazi and Rainbow flags down there. They are just pieces of colored clothe. I doubt that the alum’s grandfather "risked his life to protect that flag". If so, he was doing war wrong.

Besides the flag was probably on the ground at some point during the manufacturing or shipping phase..

Good lord Todd Starnes hypeventilating again. The flag was on the ground. I am sure the flag touched the ground as Marines were hauling it up Iwo Jima.. I would more concerned about those men involved than whether the flag made it to the top. FYI the battle raged on 60 more days till the island was secure.. How many people would literally voluntarily put themselves between a bullet and the flag… I mean would volunteer at a rifle Range and use their body as a shield for the flag. No sane person would. People die in war and veterans… Read more »

While it does anger me to see it. As a lesson on first amendment rights it is a good one. But keep an eye on them is it a lesson or just trying to desensitized the next generation .

I suggest teachers at this school eat their lunch off of the cafeteria floor for a week to demonstrate how poor people in other parts of the world have to eat their food.
…as a learning experience, of course.

This story is a crock. The flag was not damage in any way and therefore has not been "desecrated". It does not need to be destroyed, if fact it would be a true desecration if a perfectly good flag was destroyed. Read the flag code.

The ONLY thing this is meant to accomplish is to offend proud, patriotic Americans.
Could I spit in the face of a liberal and say it wasn’t meant to offend because I was teaching him/her about the flight trajectory of phlegm? Of course not!
