An Alabama Christian school has apologized after parents from an opposing school took offense at a giant football banner.
The Briarwood Christian School football team ran through a banner that read, “Make America Great Again – Trump the Tigers.”
Starnes Publishing (no relation) published a spectacular photo of the clever banner – a photo taken by Robert Carter. The publisher graciously granted us permission to repost the image.
Instead of chuckling at the creativity of the students, feathers got ruffled.
Parents of the Fairfield Tigers, a predominantly black school, took offense, according to the reporting of AL.com.
Fairfield City Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin told the newspaper no one filed an official complaint.
“I have heard from some of the parents who felt it was disrespectful and they were wondering the intent of the sign,” Gonsoulin said.
Television station WBRC interviewed a woman who said it wasn’t a “welcoming environment.”
Briarwood Christian School decided to take the high road — in spite of the insane hysterics surrounding the banner.
“Briarwood Christian School desires to publicly apologize for any understandable offense caused by the sign used during a recent football game,” the school wrote to AL.com. “The message of the sign did not represent the school’s deep commitment to biblical principles and values, nor did it reflect our commitment to honoring and respecting our guests. Our existing policies were not followed effectively and appropriate measures will be taken to correct this. Above all we desire to seek forgiveness of any who were offended.”
The apology was gracious – but unnecessary. I’m certain the students meant absolutely no harm in the message. It’s not their fault they live in a humorless society.
Perhaps Briarwood could make a banner for next week’s football game: “Make America Sane Again.”
