A fifth-grade teacher at Merrillville Intermediate School in Indiana was suspended after he told his students they were acting like monkeys in a zoo.

Superintendent Dexter Suggs told the Chicago Tribune the school district is about 65 percent black and they took the teacher’s words seriously.

“He said he was frustrated with the students’ behavior, and he did apologize, unprompted by administrators,” Suggs said. “We take matters like this extremely seriously.”

The local NAACP chapter said that minority children were subjected to abuse and  parents demanded that the teacher be fired.

The teacher said he meant nothing bad and said his comment was not intended to have racial implications. But common sense and reason aren’t in high demand these days.

According to published reports the Merrillville Intermediate School is ranked in the bottom half of all Indiana schools. Only 27 percent of the students are proficient in reading and only 29 percent are proficient in math.

The NAACP ought to be fighting mad that their local school is failing to educate the children. Instead, they got triggered by an idiom.

Maybe if the kids stopped monkeying around they wouldn’t be as dumb as box of rocks.
