Who’s Knocking?

By Sylvia Schroeder

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Rev. 3:20

When our son was younger, I always knew when he was at the front door. The doorbell rang long and short erratic buzzes. It seemed to beat like a drum with a melody only he heard. Despite it being slightly annoying, it brought me joy because I knew who was on the other side of the door. It was easy to answer with a smile.

We’ve lived in a lot of houses, and each one has a distinct entrance. Our house now has a big red front door. When my doorbell rings, I may love what’s waiting on the other side, but I confess sometimes I’m not thrilled, especially if I feel the pressure to buy something.

When we invite people in, we open a part of who we are. Jesus wants us to open wide the door of our hearts, but He doesn’t want to stop in the living room, the part that everyone sees. He wants to enter each room, so that no room is hidden from Him.

Jesus waits patiently for us to open. He wants to be with us and to spend time with us. As we learn to know the voice of the One on the other side of the door we will welcome Him with joy.

Father, thank you for wanting to spend time with me. Help me to hear Your voice and welcome you in today.
