Earthquake Rocks NYC, Boston, Philly

UPDATE: JFK International Airport in New York City, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are all on a ground stop while runways are inspected for damage.

DEVELOPING STORY: A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has rocked the northeast including New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. There’s no immediate word of any structural damage.

“The dog started barking like bloody murder and then everything started shaking,” one eyewitness told WABC.

The rare quake shook the New York area on Friday morning, rattling parts of the Big Apple, Connecticut and New Jersey. The 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey, around 10:23 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey.

From the Yonkers Police Dept. – just north of New York City:

Yonkers and the surrounding areas just experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that reportedly originated in Lebanon, New Jersey. At this time, there is no reported structural damage or injuries in Yonkers resulting from this incident.

“My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” NY Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

So far the only reported damage was a large potted plant that tipped over in Bergen County, New Jersey.

The Empire State Building X feed posted a three-word response: “I am fine.”
