Gunman Targets UVA Football Players; 3 Dead, 2 Injured

At least five members of the University of Virginia football team were shot and three were killed when an ex-player opened fire inside a garage at the University of Virginia.

The dead football players are UVA linebacker D’Sean Perry and UVA wide receivers Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler.

The gunman, identified as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is in custody.

The UVA shooting on Sunday night occurred on a bus of students who were returning to campus from a field trip in Washington DC, school president Jim Ryan said.

The field trip was to see a play associated with the class, a school administrator said.

“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” president Jim Ryan wrote. “This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community.”

The university’s emergency management issued an alert on Sunday night notifying the campus community of an “active attacker firearm.” The message warned students to shelter in place following a report of shots fired on Culbreth Road on the northern outskirts of campus. Classes were canceled Monday.
