DEVELOPING STORY: A massive explosion leveled a private home in the Washington, D.C. area, injuring a number of firefighters and passersby. Firefighters were apparently inside the home when the blast happened. As many as five were trapped in a basement.
There’s no word on their conditions or what may have caused the explosions. However, authorities believe it may have been a gas leak.
“The house is pretty much leveled,” a firefighter said on a dispatch call.
The blast happened in Sterling, Virginia and could be heard felt 15 miles away.
“Enormous boom shook the whole house just now. Ran upstairs, outside with flashlights and all the neighbors were doing the same. Apparently, a house exploded on a street nearby,” one nearby resident said.
“A large explosion noise was felt in Cascades/Sterling area at 8:25 pm,” a listener wrote to WTOP. “It shook everyone’s houses to the extent they all shook, and we all thought a tree hit our individual houses.”
