The shooting suspect died in the shootout at the PlazAmericas Mall on the southwest side of the city, Fox 26 reports.

Both the officer and the suspect were rushed to the hospital before they died, according to the outlet.

The Houston Police Department said the officer is with the San Jacinto County Pct. 1.

Joe Gamaldi, a Houston officer and the vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, offered thoughts and prayers after the officer was “gunned down and murdered” at the mall.

“The violence against officers in this country has reached critical mass and our communities are unrecognizable,” Gamaldi said. “Its demoralizing and heartbreaking.”

Wesley Hunt, a Republican candidate for the 38th Congressional District in Texas, also weighed in on the officer’s death.

“When is enough enough?” Hunt tweeted. “I am sick and tired of seeing our bravest in blue being gunned down across our country and here at home! Emily and I are praying for this officer and his family.”

Are police getting enough support?
