A Vermont state trooper heroically plunged into an icy pond and rescued an 8-year-old girl who had fallen through the ice while playing with siblings. Watch video of the rescue above.
The child survived and fully recovered after a brief hospital stay, ABC News reported.
Trooper Michelle Archer arrived at the scene just five minutes after receiving a call that the girl and her younger sister had fallen through the ice. It happened on private property in the town of Cambridge.
The 80-year-old homeowner was able to pull the younger girl to shore but couldn’t reach the older girl, so the homeowner called 911, officials said.
“Just like an adrenaline rush almost before you even get there, something that you know you have to get there as soon as you can.” Trooper Archer told television station WCAX. “Something took over and I just kicked into gear. I don’t know if it was my training or instinct, but panic wasn’t a thought at that moment.”
Body cam footage released by the state police shows Trooper Archer plunging into the frigid water in full uniform.
A second trooper arrived at the scene and assisted with getting the child out of the water and lending first aid treatment. The child made a complete recovery and has since been released from the hospital.
Vermont State Police leadership have commended Troopers Archer and Keith Cote and the homeowner “for their selfless, heroic conduct, and all three have been recommended to receive the agency’s Lifesaving Award,” state police told ABC News.
“I don’t consider myself a hero. I happened to be the first one there and a job needed to be done. And like I said before, I was there to do that job,” she told the television station.
