Requiring sex on birth certificates is discriminating, according to the American Medical Association (AMA).

The medical organization is calling for sex to be removed from public birth certificates because requiring it “can lead to discrimination.”

“Requiring [sex on birth certificates] can lead to discrimination and unnecessary burden on individuals whose current gender identity does not align with their designation at birth, namely when they register for school or sports, adopt, get married, or request personal records,” WebMD reported.

The AMA says a person’s sex would still be recorded for medical, public health and statistical, but the government-issued birth certificate to individuals would be gender-neutral.

“We unfortunately still live in a world where it is unsafe in many cases for one’s gender to vary from the sex assigned at birth,” LGBTQ activist Jeremy Toler said.

Former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley slammed the call by the medical organization, tweeting: “This is literally the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Stop the madness!”
