They say the pastrami on rye at Langer’s Deli in Los Angeles is superior to Katz Deli in New York City. That’s what they say.
“It is probably the best pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had,” customer Tina Nelis told ABC News.
But no amount of deli mustard or macaroni salad can cover up the problem facing Langers.
The famed deli across from MacArthur Park may soon close its doors – after 76 years in business.
The owners say crime and homeless have driven away longtime customers. And many tourists say it’s just not safe – too many needles – too much drugs. Earlier this year someone was killed outside the deli – and a homeless person threw the body in the lake.
“It’s not safe,” Norm Langer told FOX 11. “It’s too many needles. Too much fentanyl. Too much drugs.”
Langer says it’s commonplace to see homeless people walking around naked – using the bathroom on the sidewalks in front of his business.
“I don’t want to spoil anybody’s appetite, but you’ve got a problem with defecation on sidewalks, for somebody was strung out on drugs. They’re trying to make a score on fentanyl. They’re passed out on the sidewalk, and the city is lame and not doing something about it.”
Unless City Hall takes immediate action, some 40 people – including longtime employees – will be out of work.
Yet the pro-crime progressives who control City Hall seem to be on the side of the homeless and the criminals. And that means Californians may have to say farewell to the world’s best pastrami sandwich. It’s enough to give even some Democrats indigestion.
