A number of black churches in Boston are demanding white Christians pay reparations over slavery.
“Many of the well-known white churches in downtown Boston are connected to the slave trade and the proliferation of what was a ‘slavetocracy’ in our city,” said the Rev. Kevin Peterson, founder of the grassroots organization named the Boston People’s Reparations Commission.
“We are coming to get our check.”

Sixteen religious leaders signed the letter and sent it to several churches in the Boston area, seeking cold, hard cash.
“We call sincerely and with a heart filled with faith and Christian love for our White churches to join us and not be silent around this issue of racism and slavery and commit to reparations,” Peterson said.
Peterson is a minister and is trying to rename Faneuil Hall because of its ties to the slave trade in the 18th century.

“We point to them in Christian love to publicly atone for the sins of slavery and we ask them to publicly commit to a process of reparations where they will extend their great wealth — tens of millions of dollars among some of those churches — into the Black community,” said Peterson.
It’s not the first time white congregations have been told to pay for the sins of their fathers. A number of churches in Minnesota paid nearly $1 million to black and indigenous communities.
The irony is that the core tenet of Christianity is each person is individually responsible for their own sins, not someone else’s.
