The National Football League has come out of the closet.
One week after Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to announce he is gay, the league released a bizarre commercial, pledging their allegiance to the LGBTQ+ community.
The 30-second commercial opens with the message “Football is gay.”
“Football is lesbian. Football is beautiful. Football is queer,” the video adds. “Football is life. Football is exciting. Football is culture. Football is transgender…Football is bisexual. Football is strong.”
Activists gushed with glee.
“I am proud of the clear message this spot sends to the NFL’s LGBTQ+ fans: This game is unquestionably for you,” NFL senior director of diversity, equity and inclusion, Sam Rapoport, told Outsports. “I will be playing its first line over and over in my head all season.”
Well, the sport does feature men dressed in tight pants, gripping a ball, and slapping each other’s bottoms.
So, there’s that.
“Football is accepting,” the NFL declared. “Football is for everyone.”
“If you love this game, you are welcome here,” @NFL wrote on Twitter. “Football is for all. Football is for everyone. The NFL stands by the LGBTQ+ community today and every day.”
