DEVELOPING STORY: A motorist intentionally crashed a vehicle into a large synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities as first responders moved to quickly evacuate children, authorities said.
“Nobody at the moment has been confirmed to be hurt except potentially the shooter,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters.
“We don’t have that person in custody. It’s a work in progress, so that’s why we’re sheltering in place until we figure it out. Detroit News: Active Shooter Taken Down
Text message to members of the Temple Israel synagogue: “Lockdown is still in place, but the active shooter has been taken down. Lockdown will be in place until they know that the shooter was working alone. All kids and all staff accounted for and fine. Truck rammed into front door and opened fire.”
FBI On Scene of Attack
FBI Director Kash Patel said agents are on scene and responding “to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.” He added that FBI personnel are working with parents in Michigan.
Police sources believe a vehicle was intentionally driven into the building, and the car then caught on fire. The smoke at the scene is from the car fire.
Schools in the area are on lockdown.
“We have been alerted by the West Bloomfield Police Department of a police situation in the community,” the West Bloomfield School District said in a statement.
Local 4 has confirmed officers from Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Michigan State Police, and several ambulances are at the synagogue.
Temple Israel is a Jewish synagogue that has a preschool and a large congregation. Police have asked everyone to avoid the area.
