An elderly married couple in Bismarck, North Dakota, never had the opportunity to attend prom together, until now, decades after high school, when the two recently attended a senior living ceremony and were crowned prom king and queen.
Walt and Rita Steiner, who married in 1958, met and started dating when Rita was still in high school, according to television station KFYR-TV.

A Facebook post from the outlet displays a black and white photo from the couple’s wedding day.
The high school sweethearts enrolled in different school systems: Walt attended Richardton Abbey, an all-boys school, and Rita went to New England Saint Mary’s. When Walt’s brother was drafted into the military, he had to leave high school after two years to assist his family. Rita, on the other hand, helped plan her junior prom, but a personal incident caused her to miss the event.

“I had to leave to go help my dad on the farm because my brother was drafted into the service,” Walt told the news station. “I’ve never done that stuff,” he said of attending prom.
According to News Channel 10 in North Dakota, “Rita said she’s been waiting for this moment her entire life, but on this night those high school dreams finally came true.”
A video from the outlet shows Rita applying makeup and preparing for her dance at the Touchmark Senior Prom where she and Walt were joined by more than 150 fellow residents.
Touchmark is a senior care system with living centers in 10 states across the U.S. and in Alberta, Canada.
Walt said the best approach to a long-term marriage is to be forgiving and kind to one another.
