A Latin R&B singer staged her own protest against mass deportations in front of thousands of baseball fans at Dodger Stadium.
Nezza, whose real name is Vanessa Hernandez, sang the national anthem in Spanish – every single word – even though she was warned by baseball executives to stick to the original English version. She also wore a Dominican Republic jersey.
“We are gonna do the song in English today. I’m not sure if that wasn’t relayed,” the unnamed executive told Nezza on a video posted on social media.
Nezza posted a weepy video where she predicted she would be banished. She was – in her own words – all “shooken” up.
“I just could not believe when she walked in and told me no. I just felt like I needed to do it. For anyone who’s been following me for a while, you know everything I do is out of love,” she continued. “And I am proud of myself for doing that today. Because my parents are immigrants and they’ve been citizens my whole life at this point. They got documented really early, but I just can’t imagine them being ripped away from me, just even at this age, let alone (as) a little kid. What are we doing?”
Turns out – the exact opposite happened. The Dodgers told the Los Angeles Times that there were no hard feelings – and there would be no consequences. The Dodgers said Nezza would be welcomed back in the future.
Baseball fans were not impressed with the south-of-the-border rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
“Total lack of respect by @Nezza,” one fan wrote. “She’s invited by @Dodgers to sing in English. But makes decision to sing in Spanish. This is why people don’t take WOKE/DEI/serious. People should boycott her music.”
Another commented: “If the @Dodgers invite Nezza back to Dodger Stadium for another reimagining of our Star Spangled Banner I know I won’t be the only one who stays away. Spoke to many friends (Latino included) and it doesn’t sit right with any of us. She can serenade Dominican Rep crowds instead.”
One final note – NASCAR ran a race in Mexico City over the weekend. A group of Mexican school kids belted out the Star-Spangled Banner – in perfect English. And Mexican troops displayed a giant American flag – treating Old Glory with nothing but great respect.
Meanwhile – on our side of the border – an ungrateful spoiled brat defiled our national anthem – delivering a great big middle finger to every freedom loving American in the nation.
