Media Normalizing Assassination Culture, Says Kari Lake

Kari Lake is accusing the mainstream media of fostering what she calls an “assassination culture,” warning that reckless rhetoric has created a dangerous environment following the outbreak of gunfire at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Appearing on The Todd Starnes Show, Lake said the media “really bear the brunt of the responsibility” for escalating tensions and normalizing violence against political figures. Watch the full interview above.

“They’ve been reckless, they’ve been dangerous… and they’re trying to normalize assassination,” Lake said. “This is sick, twisted stuff.”

Lake, who was inside the ballroom when the chaos erupted, recounted the terrifying moment shots rang out among some of the most powerful leaders in the country.

“Before the sound, the boom, boom, boom of the gunfire, we were making note at our table… how kind of lax the security was getting into the hotel,” she said. “We had the President of the United States… the Vice President as well and many, many cabinet heads and members of Congress… the line of succession.”

Moments before the shooting, Lake said she made a chilling observation.

“I said… we are either in the most secure spot in the entire world or the biggest target in the whole world,” she recalled.

When the noise erupted, confusion quickly turned to fear.

“I didn’t recognize it as gunfire… Chris Ruddy… said get down I think that’s gunfire and so we ducked down,” she said.

Lake praised the swift response from federal agents.

“Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of Secret Service agents… immediately went to get the president… and secure them and get them out,” she said. “I was impressed with the actions… inside the room.”

But she sharply criticized security failures leading up to the event.

“I was not impressed with how the hotel handled… checking tickets and allowing people in straight off the street,” Lake said. “We need to look closer at security.”

Still, Lake reserved her strongest condemnation for media figures and cultural influencers, arguing their rhetoric has contributed to a climate where violence is increasingly normalized.

“We just heard two or three days ago, Jimmy Kimmel doing what he was calling a comedy skit where he’s normalizing… the thought of the president being assassinated,” she said. “Can you imagine saying something like that?”

Lake contrasted today’s media environment with years past.

“Can you even imagine even 10, 15 years ago… the entire country would have been outraged?” she asked.

Instead, she said, sustained negative coverage has shaped public perception in dangerous ways.

“The media has been so nasty toward President Trump… they’re trying to put in the hearts and minds of Americans that he’s a bad guy,” Lake said.

Her conclusion was blunt: “I am disgusted by the fake media.”
