Iranian government leaders and citizens have been marching in the streets chanting, “Death to America.”
But a MSNBC political analyist said that when Iranians chant “Death to America” they really don’t mean “Death to America.”
Rick Stengle, a former Obama administration official, questioned why the United States is aligned with Israel rather than Iran, which he called “the most Western nation” in the Middle East.
When pressed on Iranians’ “death to America” chants, Stengel recalled a 2014 trip to the country. “I was sitting … at a rally,” he said. “These young guys were chanting ‘death to America.’ … They finished the chants. And two young men came over and said, ‘Are you American?’ I said yes, [and they said,] ‘We want to welcome you to our country. We love American culture. We love American movies.'”
“Iran is the most Western nation in the whole Middle East,” Stengel went on. “We have much more in common with them than a lot of countries that we do have alliances with.”
I’m not so sure about that. And neither is U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A memo from CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott, obtained by NewsNation, said “thousands of Iranian nationals have been documented entering the United States illegally and countless more were likely in the known and unknown got-a-ways.”
Thousands of Iranian nationals were allowed to enter the nation illegally during the Biden administration. Countless more were got-aways.
And there are grave concerns that sleeper cells could be activated as a result of the president’s decision to shut down Iran’s nuclear program.
“Though we have not received any specific credible threats to share with you all currently, the threat of sleeper cells or sympathizers acting on their own, or at the behest of Iran has never been higher,” Scott added.
All that to say if you come across some guy from Tehran hollering “Death to America” – I don’t think that’s code for “Howdy! How about some homemade Hummus and Falafel?”
